Self-Publishing Services: Chapbooks & Poetry Collections
Our self-publishing service is designed for poets who want a professionally produced book without giving up their rights, royalties, or creative control. We take your completed manuscript and turn it into a fully published chapbook or poetry collection on your own Amazon KDP account - meaning you are 100% self-published, receive 100% of your royalties, and retain all rights to your work.
We handle the technical, design, and upload process so you can focus on being an author - not learning publishing software.
What This Service Includes
Book Interior Design & Formatting
Your book will be professionally formatted to Amazon KDP standards with the following specifications:
Trim size: 5.5" x 8.5"
Format: Paperback
Paper type: Cream paper
Interior: Black-and-white only (including any images or author photos)
Readable, professionally sized font (no tiny or cramped text)
Your book interior can include:
Copyright page
Table of Contents
Optional Dedication
Optional Acknowledgements
Optional Preface or Author’s Note
Poems arranged as a single section or split into multiple sections
Page numbers
Optional running headers (alternating author name and book title) or no headers at all
An author bio page at the back of the book
You may include artwork or images within the interior. Please note:
All interior images print in black and white
Amazon KDP requires a 72-page minimum for books with color interiors, so this service is best suited for black-and-white artwork
Book Cover Design (Matte Finish)
We create a full paperback cover spread (front and back) tailored specifically for Amazon KDP.
Important note about chapbooks:
Chapbooks do not have spine text
Amazon requires a minimum of 79 pages before spine text is possible
This is standard across the industry and not a design limitation
The spine width depends entirely on page count, and chapbooks are simply too thin
Your cover process includes:
A detailed book cover questionnaire
Choices for imagery style, such as:
Text-only
Illustration or hand-drawn
Abstract design
Photography or symbolic imagery
Selection of fonts and color palettes (we provide examples and can try multiple options)
Use of professional stock images unless you provide your own
We use stock imagery to keep our services affordable and accessible. Custom illustrated or original artwork covers typically start at $300+, and our goal is to support authors at all stages.
If you already have a completed cover:
We’re happy to use it as long as it meets Amazon KDP’s exact size and formatting requirements
If it does not, we do not provide that service, so you would need to have it resized
Back cover options are completely up to you:
Short book description + author bio (most common)
Quote or poem excerpt
Blank back cover
Amazon KDP Setup & Publishing
Your book is published under your own Amazon KDP account.
We will:
Upload your manuscript file
Upload your finalized book cover
Enter all book details into KDP (description, keywords, categories, pricing, etc.)
Walk you through proof approval
Publish the book on your chosen release date
You will receive a free Amazon-assigned ISBN, which allows your book to be sold on Amazon.
To keep our self-publishing services affordable, consistent, and efficient, we work from a standard formatting system that follows Amazon KDP best practices and professional poetry publishing norms.
Our standard formatting covers the vast majority of poetry books and produces a clean, readable, bookstore-ready result.
Requests outside of this standard formatting are considered custom formatting and may require an additional fee.
What’s Included in Our Standard Formatting
Our standard formatting includes:
5.5" x 8.5" paperback trim size
Cream paper, black-and-white interior
Professionally sized, readable font
Standard margins, spacing, and line breaks
Consistent poem layout throughout the book
Page numbers
Optional running headers (author name / book title) or no headers
Standard front matter:
Copyright page
Table of Contents
Optional dedication, acknowledgements, or author’s note
Standard section breaks (if the book is divided into sections)
Author bio page at the back of the book
This format is designed to:
Print cleanly on Amazon KDP
Avoid common formatting errors
Prioritize readability and longevity
What’s Considered “Out of Standard” Formatting?
Some requests fall outside of standard book formatting and require additional design time, testing, and revisions. These are billed separately.
Examples include (but are not limited to):
Highly Customized Layouts
Different font styles or sizes for individual poems
Poems with intentionally inconsistent spacing throughout the book
Experimental layouts that change from page to page
Poems requiring precise visual alignment (concrete poetry, shaped poems)
Complex Typography Requests
Multiple fonts used throughout the interior
Decorative or handwritten fonts that require manual spacing adjustments
Custom kerning or tracking requests
Non-standard capitalization rules applied selectively
Advanced Page Design
Poems starting at specific vertical positions on the page
Full-page poems with custom spacing that must remain exact
Poems intentionally split across pages in nonstandard ways
Multiple poems on a single page with unique spacing rules
Special Section and Structure Requests
Custom section title pages with unique formatting per section
Alternating layouts between sections
Interludes, visual breaks, or recurring design elements throughout the book
Image and Art Complexity
Images that must align precisely with specific poems or lines
Full-bleed artwork or edge-to-edge designs (not standard for paperbacks)
Image placement that varies intentionally across the book
Image-heavy layouts that require repeated test prints
Footnotes, Endnotes, or Annotations
Poems with footnotes or commentary
Endnotes tied to specific lines or pages
Marginal notes or side text
Why Custom Formatting Costs More
Custom formatting:
Requires manual adjustments rather than templates
Often needs multiple test exports and proof checks
Takes significantly more time than standard formatting
Can introduce printing risks that must be carefully managed
To keep base package prices accessible for all authors, custom formatting is priced separately based on scope and complexity.
How Custom Requests Are Handled
Custom formatting requests must be discussed before work begins
We’ll let you know what is considered standard vs. custom
Any additional cost will be quoted and approved in advance
Not all custom requests are compatible with Amazon KDP printing
Our Goal
Our goal is not to limit creativity - it’s to ensure your book:
Prints correctly
Looks professional
Is readable and consistent
Fits within an affordable, transparent pricing structure
With too “outside-of-the-box” formatting, you run into Amazon KDP potentially not approving your book.
Most authors discover that our standard formatting provides the perfect balance between creativity and professionalism. While your voice and work remain entirely your own, your book also needs to meet industry and printing standards so it functions as an actual published book - not a draft or experimental document.
Requests for non-standard formatting are rare, but when they do occur, they must be reviewed in advance so we can determine feasibility, timeline, and any additional design considerations.
Not Sure if Your Book Meets our Standard Formatting?
Most books do - and if yours doesn’t, we’ll let you know before we begin. We’ll walk you through what’s considered standard, what may need customization, and any next steps so there are no surprises.
Standard Formatting vs. Custom Formatting Requests
Proof & Author Copies
Before publication, you will order a proof copy directly through Amazon KDP:
Proof copies are marked “Not for Resale”
They use a temporary barcode and do not include an ISBN
Proofs are for reviewing layout, formatting, and design before going live
After publication, you may order author copies:
Author copies are printed versions of your live book
Sold to you at printing cost only
You may resell or give them away
Please note:
You do not receive royalties on proof or author copies
Proof and author copy orders do not appear in your KDP sales reports
Typical printing costs range from $2–$4 per copy, depending on:
Page count
Ink type (black-and-white vs color)
Amazon marketplace (US, UK, etc.)
Trim size, bleed settings, and matte cover finish do not affect printing cost.
Royalties & Pricing Control
You control:
Your book’s list price
When and where it’s sold
Price changes at any time
Amazon KDP royalty structure:
50% royalty for list prices $9.98 and below
60% royalty for list prices $9.99 and above
Royalty formula:
(Royalty rate × list price) – printing cost = your royalty
Example:
List price: $15
Royalty rate: 60%
Printing cost: $5.00
Publishing Timeline
The timeline for each publishing package depends on manuscript readiness, poem count, and author response time, but most projects follow the same general process.
Overall Timeline

This timeline begins after all required materials are submitted and your invoice is paid.
Step-by-Step Timeline Breakdown

Package-Specific Timelines
While all packages follow the same process, complexity affects turnaround time:
Poetry Chapbook (20–30 poems):
Approximately 3–4 weeksStandard Poetry Collection (31–60 poems):
Approximately 4 weeksFull-Length Poetry Collection (61–100 poems):
Approximately 4–5 weeksExtended Poetry Collection (101–130 poems):
Approximately 5 weeks
Important Timeline Notes
Timelines assume the manuscript is final
Editing, proofreading, or major rewrites are not included in the standard package. If you add-these on to your package, it will add an additional 1-2 weeks
Additional poems added later may extend the timeline
Amazon proof printing and shipping times vary by marketplace and shipping method
Author response time directly impacts completion speed
Your Book Release Date
We recommend planning your book release at least 3 months after your project start date.
This timeline allows for:
Professional formatting and cover design
Uploading and publishing through Amazon KDP
Ordering and reviewing your proof copy
Ordering author copies
Giving yourself time to promote your book intentionally, not last-minute
A rushed release often means missed opportunities for visibility, reviews, and meaningful promotion.
Why 3 Months Is the Minimum We Recommend
A 3-month timeline gives you:
Time to receive and review a physical proof
Time to make any final corrections
Time to plan a launch strategy (social media, email announcements, events, etc.)
Time to order author copies for giveaways, signings, or launch photos
Even with Amazon’s fast printing, proof and author copy shipping can take 1–3 weeks, depending on the marketplace and shipping option.
What’s Considered a “Standard” Publishing Timeline?
In traditional and independent publishing, it’s common for books to be released 6 months to 1 year after production begins.
Many authors choose a longer timeline because it allows them to:
Build anticipation and awareness
Grow or warm up their audience
Line up reviews, blurbs, or launch events
Schedule readings, signings, or virtual launches
Create promotional content without pressure
A longer timeline doesn’t mean you’re moving slowly - it means you’re giving your book room to arrive well.
Choosing What’s Right for You
Some authors:
Have a specific date in mind (a birthday, anniversary, or seasonal theme)
Want a soft, quiet release with minimal promotion
Prefer to spend months building excitement before launch
Others want to publish as soon as possible - and that’s okay too.
There is no single “correct” release date. What matters most is choosing a timeline that supports both the production of your book and your goals as an author.
Our Recommendation
Minimum release window: 3 months after start date
Ideal release window: 4–6 months
Extended planning option: 6–12 months for authors building long-term visibility
Cost of Our Publishing Packages
How Our Publishing Packages Are Priced
Our self-publishing packages are priced by poem count, not page count.
This is intentional - and it allows us to price our services fairly while giving authors flexibility in how their book ultimately comes together. And - it’s just easier. Your final page count doesn’t come until after formatting.
Each poem requires individual attention during formatting, regardless of how long or short it is. Pricing by poem count reflects the actual work involved in producing your book.
You’re never paying for “extra pages” (especially the intentional blank ones) - you’re paying for the care, time, and expertise that go into preparing each poem for publication.
Additional Factors Beyond Poem Count
Poem count is the foundation, but formatting a poetry book also involves:
Creating front and back matter (copyright, TOC, author bio, etc.)
Structuring sections and section breaks
Managing poem-to-poem transitions
Placing interior artwork (if included)
Ensuring the book meets Amazon KDP printing standards
Testing exports and preparing print-ready files
Pricing by poem count allows us to:
Keep packages predictable and transparent
Avoid penalizing authors for poem length
Ensure each poem receives proper care
Frequently Asked Questions about the Cost:
-
When you purchase a Publishing Package and we get started, we are assuming your manuscript is complete and ready for us to begin formatting. However, we understand that manuscripts suddenly evolve and last minute changes occur. We have ran into this situation many times. If you add poems, pricing will be adjusted accordingly and you will be emailed an invoice for the additional poems if you move into the next package tier. Keep in mind, poem additions may extend the project timeline slightly.
-
Yes - in limited cases. Custom pricing may be offered when a manuscript slightly exceeds a package limit, the collection includes an unusually high number of long or multi-page poems, or the project falls outside standard poetry collection norms. Contact us if you are unsure or want to request a custom price.
-
We will review your manuscript and provide a quote based on poem count and complexity. Contact us should you have a collection beyond 130 poems.
